VIVA MEXICO CITY!

Nine memorable days and eight nights in one
of the world’s most colorful and historic cities
with one sighted guide per person
May 5 - May 13, 2026

Introduction

This unique itinerary was created for Mind’s Eye Travel by

Ally Echevarria, our most experienced and best-traveled sighted

guide, who has family there and knows Mexico City intimately.

Traveling to Mexico City, known to the locals as CDMX, for Ciudad de México, is like traveling to Europe without the jet lag and for half the price, but with all the history, culture and gastronomic delights of a vibrant Old World city.

We will walk the cobblestone streets of Centro Historico, meander through Roma on a foodie adventure, discover the life of one of the world’s great female artists, Frida Kahlo, on a tour of her childhood home; and browse a typical mercado, where we can shop for everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothing, leather goods, tablecloths, wooden ware and handmade candies.

We’ll visit Teotihuacan, one of the finest examples of pre-Columbian architecture and city planning and site of one of the tallest pyramids in the world, and also Puebla, a bustling old-fashioned city with some of the best food in Mexico. And no trip to CDMX is complete without floating the canals of Xochimilco aboard an elaborately decorated trajinera boat. This will be a gourmet adventure, too. From Michelin Star restaurants, including a taco stand, to some of the best street food imaginable, we will find something that everyone’s palate will savor.

Itinerary

DAY 1, May 5
Mexico city

Arrive at the international airport in Mexico City, where you will be met by our van and driver and taken to our centrally located hotel. This evening we will have our usual meet & greet dinner (included) in the neighborhood. Our hotel will also include a lovely fresh breakfast buffet for us each morning.

DAY 2, May 6
Roma & Centro Historic

After a light breakfast, our day will begin with a private food tour of hip and fashionable Roma, where we’ll taste and learn about some of the most delicious foods CDMX has to offer, including tamales, chilaquiles, conchas and tlacoyos. We will also savor some of Mexico’s tropical fruits and vegetables as well as the fragrances of the city’s 24/7 flower mart. Then we will have free time to discover Roma’s boutiques, parks and trendy bars, or to relax before meeting our guide for a private walking tour of the Centro Historico, the heart and soul of the city, with its fascinating mix of grand Colonial Era architecture, quirky old-fashioned charm and urban energy.

We will be walking above the ruins of the island city of Tenochtitlan, where the Spanish conquistadores defeated the native Mexica people, and see the Templo Mayor, the massive temple pyramid uncovered by utility-company workers in 1978. Today the area is home to the city’s largest cathedral as well as the National Palace, Mexico’s seat of government and the home of President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch

Day 3, May 7
Coyoacán

This is one of our favorite places. Once a Colonial Era settlement far beyond the city limits, Coyoacán’s quiet plazas and cobblestone streets are today a pleasant oasis within the capital. We will stroll the jacaranda-lined streets to Casa Azul, the Blue House, the hacienda-style childhood home of the neighborhood’s most famous resident, the painter Frida Kahlo. After a tour of the house, we’ll walk to the local mercado (market) for lunch and shopping. We can dine with the locals in food stalls or visit the main square with its restaurants and coffee shops, or simply relax while guitarists and other street performers entertain al fresco diners. After lunch we’ll regroup for a guided walking tour of the neighborhood. You may end the day by taking our van back to the hotel or you may choose to spend the evening in this charming area of the city.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4, May 8
Puebla

Today we explore the city of Puebla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a treasure trove of history and tradition known for its beautifully preserved colonial buildings and iconic Talavera pottery. Puebla is more old-fashioned and family-oriented than CDMX and has its own traditions of art, craftwork and cuisine.

We will stop at one of the oldest markets to sample local culinary specialties such as mole poblano, a thick and savory chile-and-chocolate sauce. We will tour the Puebla Tunnels, which date back to 1531. Carved out of limestone, they are tall enough for riders on horseback and were probably meant to help defend against Spanish invaders. The Battle of Cinco de Mayo took place at the mouth of the tunnel. Today the passageways are set with lights and sounds that transport visitors back in time.

Meals included: Breakfast

day 5, May 9
Hot air ballooning/Cacao Experience

Today we have options: an early-morning hot-air balloon ride over the Teotihuacan Valley with coffee, breakfast, an honor toast and a diploma at the end of the flight ($310, includes your sighted guide); or free time to explore and shop in another of Mexico City’s many colorful neighborhoods.

After lunch we’ll all gather for a private hands-on exploration of Mexico’s cacao heritage. Dive into the distinct flavors, regional differences and traditions that make Mexican chocolate unique. We’ll try a variety of cacao beans, chocolate bars and drinks, and we’ll craft our own traditional Mexican chocolate tablet to take home.

day 6, May 10
Chapultepec Park

Our day will begin with a walk through the city’s beloved Chapultepec Park, beautifully landscaped with fountains, gardens and winding, wooded footpaths. We’ll hop aboard a pedal boat and “cycle” around a small lake. There will be street carts where we can indulge in traditional Mexican ice cream bars and fresh fruit garnished with hints of lime and chile. We may see Native Olmec women weaving traditional brightly colored bags, or the Aztec Dance of the Flyers, a ritual where participants climb a 30-meter pole, tie their ankles to ropes and launch themselves into the air while one stays on top, dancing and playing the flute and drum.

There are museums to explore and of course Chapultepec Castle, one of the few true royal palaces in North America. The park is also home to the CDMX’s most visited museum, the National Museum of Anthropology, with its artifacts from Mexico’s pre-Hispanic past including the famous Aztec calendar. We will have time also to visit the nearby upscale neighborhood of Polanco for fancy shopping or more food adventures.

Meals included: Breakfast

day 7, May 11
Teotihuacan and the Aztec Pyramids

We’re out early this morning to drive about 30 miles to Teotihuacan, the Aztecs’ “place of gods,” now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our private guide will escort us through this sacred site, one of the finest examples of pre-Columbian architecture and city planning in Mexico. Teotihuacan’s Pyramid of the Sun is the third largest pyramid in the world. We will be able to touch the temple walls and perhaps climb one of the smaller pyramids. Afterward we will have lunch (included) at La Gruta, The Cave—a famous underground restaurant lit only by candles.

On our way back to CDMX we will stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where we will learn about the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe in 1531, the “miracle that changed history” for both the Aztecs and the Spanish conquistadores

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

day 8, May 12
Xochimilco

After breakfast we will visit southern Mexico City and board a traditional trajinera, an ornately decorated boat, for a ride along the canals in Xochimilco, a remnant of the vast system of waterways that once ribboned this valley. We’ll have our farewell lunch onboard, provided by one of the many floating canoe vendors. The food—such as quesadillas with handmade blue corn tortillas and fresh Oaxacan cheese—is freshly prepared to order. There are also bar canoes where you can order a michelada, a beer cocktail served over ice with lime and chile, or a local margarita. (Soft drinks and water will be available also, of course.) Mariachis will sing for us as we float along on this unique Mexican experience.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
