Five extra days in
'The Jewel of South Africa'
May 16 - 20, 2025
Introduction
As an add-on before our 2025 Safari, Mind’s Eye Travel offers this extension, which begins in Cape Town, at the southern tip of South Africa. This itinerary focuses on the Cape of Good Hope, one of the top tourist destinations in the world for sight-seeing, fine wines and fine dining. Again, we will be looked after by the wonderful people of Bushtrails Tours.
Itinerary
DAY 1, May 16
The Commodore Hotel
At Cape Town International Airport we will be met by our Bushtrails guides for the short drive to the iconic Victoria & Albert Waterfront, where we will check in at the Commodore Hotel, with its sweeping views of Table Mountain, Cape Town Harbour and Robben Island. After lunch at one of the many excellent restaurants nearby, we will ascend (by vehicle and then cable car) Table Mountain for a bird’s eye view of Cape Town—weather permitting, of course. Dinner tonight will be at Baia, the well-known seafood restaurant.
DAY 2, May 17
The Commodore Hotel
We’ll set out along the N2 Highway from Cape Town over scenic Sir Lowry’s Pass to Caledon, where we turn south on the stunning Heaven on Earth Valley Road towards Hermanus. On the way we’ll stop at the Creation and La Vierge vineyards to taste exceptional white wines. After lunch at Burgundy, a fine seafood restaurant overlooking Hermanus Harbour, we will take Clarence Drive along the dramatic coastline back to Cape Town. Dinner tonight will be at MoMo’s Restaurant in Sea Point.
Day 3, May 18
The Commodore Hotel
After breakfast, we’ll embark on a scenic drive around Sea Point and Camps Bay to Hout Bay. There we’ll cross Constantia Neck to the Groot Constantia Estate, where we will take in some Western Cape history and taste more fine wines. Our drive will continue to Muizenberg and then Simons Town and Boulders Beach, where we visit the thriving colony of African penguins. Our next stop will be the Cape Point Nature Reserve, at the southwestern tip of the African Continent. Then we’ll take the stunning Chapman’s Peak drive back to the Commodore. Tonight’s dinner will be at the City Grill.
Day 4, May 19
The Commodore Hotel
Today we’ll drive to Stellenbosch and the famous vineyard country of the Western Cape. We’ll stop along the way to sample some of the finest wines in the world at the Waterford, Spier and Rust en Vrede estates. Then we cross the mountain pass to Franschhoek and Boschendal. At the Fairview Estate we will enjoy a wine and cheese pairing followed by lunch at their excellent restaurant. Then we’ll go next door to the Spice Route Estate for chocolates, craft beers and craft gins before heading back to the Victoria & Albert Waterfront and the Commodore. Tonight’s farewell dinner will be at the Harbour House Restaurant.
