Sept. 18 & 19, Portland

After everyone is checked into our Old Port hotel we willl have a “wicked good” Meet & Greet dinner at a local restaurant. We can make a stop for gelato or ice cream on the way back.

We’ll do an “Easy on easy Off” narrated Vintage Fire Truck Tour. Great overview and orientation of the Old Port and waterfront.

Just a short drive away, we will visit Portland Head Light, the oldest of 62 lighthouses in Maine and Commissioned by George Washington. As we feel our way around the outside of the lighthouse, we can hear the waves on the rocky shore and smell the sea air.  A stop to the former Keepers' Quarters, which is a museum, will complete our visit.

Curious about Portland's history with railroads, fires, wars, famous poets and Hollywood producers? Our walking tour includes historic Old Port, downtown and waterfront areas, sharing highlights of Portland's history since 1632.

Sept. 20, 21 & 22, Camden

If time allows our group can choose to spend more time in Portland or head to Freeport for a little time to shop at L.L. Bean.

After checking into The Lord Camden Inn, we will stroll to a local restaurant for a dinner on the harbor, hopefully al fresco

In the morning, we walk across the street to the Harbor and board Sue & Silvio’s 30 ft. Boston Whaler. You’ll have your choice to sit on a bench in the stern (aft.) or down in the galley. We’ll motor out of the harbor, go by Curtis Island Light House into Penobscot Bay and head to Warren Island State Park. We will have a catered picnic lunch and a short hike before departing the island. Have you ever had a Whoopie Pie?

Optional: Windjammer sail on the Surprise or Lobster Boat Tour on the Lively Lady II.

Owls Head Transportation Private Tour

A world-class collection includes more than 150 historic cars, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes. Some of the them are rare originals, others are exact replicas. Many of them still drive and fly. Docents will take us through the museum to explain displays and even let us touch some of them.

Weather permitting, Model T rides and biplane flights (extra cost and reservations) are available.

Our friends at The Midcoast Sports Car Club are offering rides in a variety of classic cars. Some of the possibilities are Aston Martin Vantage, Bugatti, MG, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Morgan, or Ferrari. I’ll have an updated list when we are closer to our trip.

Next is our lunch stop at McLoon’s Lobster Shack, on the wharf in South Thomaston. The lobster boats diesel engine is easy to hear as they pull up to the dock to deliver their catch. It isn’t as well-known as Reds Eats but the ambience is much better the lobster rolls are bigger and the price is more reasonable. They have burgers, too.

Sept. 23 & 24, Bar Harbor

On the way to “Bah Hahbah”, we’ll stop at Momo's Cheesecake Bakery. homemade cheesecake by the slice. 30 yummy flavors to choose from and it’s on the honor system. We’ll put $6.00 in the jar for each of you and sit outside on the picnic tables and enjoy.

Our hotel is the historic Bar Harbor Inn & Spa, dating back to 1887. It’s located on Frenchmen Bay near the town landing, shops and cafés.

The Shore Path starts right behind our hotel and goes along the shoreline for 1.5 miles. The path is well groomed easy walking and therapeutic hearing the waves and feeling the breeze and sun on your face.

Acadia National Park Loop Tour

The first stop is the Park information Center. If you don’t already have your Access Pass, this is a good place to get one. The pass gives you free entry to all National Parks for the rest of your life. Bring any proof of blindness, they will issue you a card and it’s free

Today we’re taking each stop at our own pace giving us plenty of time in each location. One of our stops is the Summit of Cadillac Mountain. We’ll walk the pathway up to the top of the mountain where the sun comes up first on the United States. Another stop will be Sand Beach. We’ll take the pathway and steps down to the beach, walk along the water’s edge, hear the waves smell the sea air and hear the seagulls. If you are brave, you might want to dip your toes in the waters’ edge. Another stop will be the Jordan Pond House. The house specialty is popovers with homemade jam just like my Mom used to make.

Horse Drawn Carriage Rides in the Park

Our walking tour with our local, experienced guide will share highlights and secrets from the Gilded Age, stories of rum running, and tales of the town folk who influenced the development of Bar Harbor.

Our last night on our trip ends on a high note. Our hotel will put on a lobster bake. Including chowder, whole lobster, mussels, corn on the cob, potatoes and dessert. Steak or chicken will also be available for those who don’t want lobster.

Sept. 25 Unity

MOFGA Fair, The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association. Also known as the Common Ground Fair. Sheep shearing, horse and oxen demonstrations and hundreds of exhibitors, activities, dances, music and Maine organic foods make this fair unique.

Back to Portland Jetport for your late afternoon flight home. If you prefer to stay overnight in Portland and fly home the next morning, there are a few inexpensive hotels near the airport that offer airport shuttles.
